Sun Rock by MVRDV

Located in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park near Taichung, the building’s number one motif is garage and preservation of durable strength equipment. The website of Taipower’s new facility receives a lot of publicity from the sun during the year, so Sun Rock’s rounded shape is designed to maximize the way much of this daylight can be harnessed for strength. On the south side, the construction is slightly sloped down, developing an excellent location on the ground facing the sun throughout the center of the day. At the northern end, the curved shape maximizes the location of the solar-powered uncovered building inside in the mornings and evenings.

The facade maximizes this solar capacity with a string of folds, which help photovoltaic panels (mixed with windows, if necessary) on their top floor. The perspective of these folds is adjusted in all the components of the facade to maximize the power production capacity of the solar panels. As a result of these measures, construction can help at least 4,000 rectangular meters of photovoltaic panels that could generate about a kilowatt hour of recent easy-to-resist year on year – an total of resistance equal to the burning of eighty-five tons of crude – and make construction absolutely self-sufficient.

Other design alternatives are under attention that could offload a good location of photovoltaic panels, with calculations showing that the construction may want to generate up to 1.7 kWh of recent time per year to provide a contributing force to the grid.

“Of course, our goal is to make all our initiatives as sustainable as possible. However, we see that initiatives can go through the past and be simply sustainable on their own. This company has a special and charming ability,” says Winy Maas, founding accomplice of MVRDV. “The person is a strong employer, which has allowed us to do more than usual. We have coated the entire facade with photovoltaics, maximizing the benefits of the resistance to make it more manageable and autonomous, for its own use, but also allowing the construction to grow to be a force production device, exporting the force to the relaxation of the network. This is achieved by placing the panels on the maximum green. Therefore, our design is totally based on facts. It’s always fun to see the results while allowing the evaluation to determine a part of the design.”

Recently, the core of the construction is the Data Room, a stationary atrium with real-time presentations of the facts about Taipower’s process and the total of renewable force the employer generates. On the primary floor, a gallery offers a view of the conservation workshop, allowing the general public to closely examine the machines that make lasting resistance possible, from solar panels to large wind turbine blades. A similar gallery for exhibitions is covered at the level of the pinnacle, while at the same time at the level of the roof, under the safe shelter of a dome of solar panels, is an entire wooden terrace for visitors to each site and Taipower staff to relax.

Sun Rock’s enduring resilience-generating functions make the building an additional operating and preservation facility; the fitting out cleverly combines the building’s utilitarian areas with a chain of gallery areas. The building is also a critical conversation device for Taipower to publicly showcase its goals for a greener future.
